Interestingly enough, there is a new ad campaign being put out by the American Humanist Association (code word for atheists - usually) that questions God's existence going on in D.C. Though they say it is aimed at agnostics, atheists, and the like who feel lonely during this time of year, they also admit they "we are trying to plant a seed of rational thought and critical thinking and questioning in people's minds." Sounds like a bit of an attack to me. Rational thinking is part of the Catholic faith. In fact, it is the irrational man who fails to see that God does exist. The evidence is everywhere. Truth, Goodness, Beauty, Creation, Love, desire for Happiness, Joy, Peace, and on and on. All of this is not simply the result of some kind of godless evolutionary process. Someone...put some THOUGHT into this. But look at the statement they use.
"Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness' sake."
What's the problem? Well what is the good? Is the good defending the dignity of the human person? Sure many would say. Well does that include the unborn child or the elderly? And we're back at the debate during this past election cycle. It's a nonsensical statement. You cannot run a society based on doing "good" when what is good is questioned so often today. This is part of the reason our society is struggling to survive. We don't know what the good is. We have become selfish and immoral and we don't realize it. Why, because we've defined the good as something that is truly evil. The good must be grounded in something objective, something that does not change....ergo...God (because, for the philosopher, even natural law comes from God).
There is another catch phrase that was used in London. Check this one out.
"There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."
This one is just as funny. I think I would be worrying a lot more if this was all I had. 60 or 70 years if I am healthy. That's it? Why this life? It's filled with sickness, suffering, violence, and then death. Talk about a shaft. This is why an atheist philosopher so easily summed up the truly rational atheist position...when and how should I kill myself. Because if life is simply this life, it will be a whole lot less miserable if you kill yourself now than wait for tomorrow. But obviously God does exist. And He ultimately gives meaning to our lives. There is no true joy without God. This is going to be an interesting Christmas season... :)
