"Porritt, who has two children, intends to persuade environmental pressure groups to make population a focus of campaigning.
“Many organizations think it is not part of their business. My mission with the Friends of the Earth and the Greenpeaces of this world is to say: ‘You are betraying the interests of your members by refusing to address population issues and you are doing it for the wrong reasons because you think it is too controversial,” he said.
Porritt, a former chairman of the Green party, says the government must improve family planning, even if it means shifting money from curing illness to increasing contraception and abortion."
This is pretty scary if you think about it. He thinks having children is one of the main problems in the fight against global warming. I think children are the last problem we have. If fact, they are the hope of the future.
And the last words scare even more. He would even justify spending money on contraception and abortion INSTEAD of curing illnesses. Talk about a backwards mentality about life. It also seems like a really materialist version of the world. Life is a commodity that eats up resources so we need to limit it. But the reality is, life is the most valuable thing we have! Ok, this is kind of rambling. Any thoughts? :)

God created the earth as a habitat for his people!! How did we come to love the habitat more? Talk about backwards reasoning...
We should just all become Vegans! That will sure save the planet...
I found an article satirizing Porritt's thesis. It is written by Sebastian Schmieg, who looks at green issues and news stories from the political, business, technological, and social perspectives. He focuses especially on the topics that have to do with England.
I love his sarcasm:
"After all, saving the planet is far more important than saving an ‘unwanted’ human child, ... At least, we now know the price of a human life: something that we used to think was priceless."
"One has the sense that, for Mr Porritt, it would be better if humanity disappeared altogether or shrank to far more ‘reasonable’ proportions than that we choked our planet in carbon, which would ultimately have the same result, anyway: humanity’s extinction. But better for us to be extinct with our green planet still bio-diverse and beautiful than for us to drag the planet down with us."

BTW, I was trying to look up Jonathan Porritt's family tree. It would be interesting to see how much of his family would disappear if they weren't so "irresponsible".
So sad....
