Dying Only To Be Reborn Again

I'm sure that some of you who follow this blog have noticed the lack of activity in the recent months. You may have thought to yourself, "There they go, starting a blog with high aspirations, but now it's fallen by the wayside. Typical..."

Or maybe not.

Yes, we are shutting this blog down. However, we have been planning something even more awesomer than you were possibly imagining. A shiny new blog AND a new website, all in one! Now an out-of-date blog and an out-of-date website can happen in one place! Well, hopefully not. The goal of this newly designed website is to leverage technology as a means for assisting the building of our community. We want to strive, as Pope Benedict says in his message for the 43rd World Communications Day, "to bring the witness of [our] faith to the digital world."

So without further ado, hold on to your butts since it's time to update your bookmarks and all that jazz:

Assisi, Italy

Hi everyone! Since nobody has posted for here for way toooo long, I will put up a few pictures I took when I went to Italy.

This church here is the Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi (Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi). There is so much history here, I don't know where to begin. First of all, Assisi is the birthplace of St. Francis, and he is buried inside this church, but this church wasn't even around when St. Francis was alive. Before St. Francis died he told his brothers to bury him at the edge of the cliff of Assisi, where criminals were executed. The land was so barren and bleak that nobody wanted to go near it. It used to be called Hell's hill but now with the church built, it is called Paradise hill. The first foundation stone was laid by Pope Gregory IX, the day right after St. Francis was canonized (7/16/1228).

It is also the mother church of the Franciscan Friars.

Inside the lower church is the tomb of St. Francis - sober and humble, to reflect St. Francis' life of poverty

Next time I'll post a picture of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which is just down the hill from this basilica. It is an even more awesome place because

1) it is where St. Francis actually died (and lived)

2) there is a bed of roses without thorns because ...

3) it was actually built to accomodate pilgrims who visit the "Porziuncola" - a TINY TINY chapel inside that is only big enough to fit 15 ppl or so... what's so special about it?!

Waving gooodbye to Assisi from our car

Do we seek to know God?

Have you ever been in Mass and while listening to the homily heard something that made you just sit back and say "whoa"? I just had to share something very simple yet so real that it is a serious challenge to all of us, especially when we find ourselves on religious "cruise-control".

In addressing a chapel full of students coming to Mass for the first time for the school year, the priest said this- "If in our daily lives we choose to put such little time into prayer and so much into distraction, when we finally turn to God in our time of great need, will we be surprised to discover that we do not know Him?"
